New Tree Planting Checklist

New Tree Checklist 🌳

Congratulations on deciding to plant a new tree! You have made a wise choice in supporting our precious ecosystem. Now before you rush off to the nursery and purchase the prettiest plant in the lot, take a minute to go through my new tree planting checklist. There are many variables to consider before digging that hole.

Before You Buy

  1. Choose a well thought out spot to plant the tree.
  2. Will the tree be winter hardy in your specific grow zone?
  3. What size space do you have to work with? How big can this tree get?
  4. Are there any overhead power lines nearby?
  5. Is this tree going to be used to reduce energy costs? This will determine which side of the house to plant on.
  6. What type of soil do you have? Get your soil tested at your local University Extension office for nutrient recommendations. https://extension.umn.edu/managing-soil-and-nutrients/soil-testing-lawns-and-gardens
  7. If the tree will be on the boulevard, is it salt and pollutant tolerant?
  8. If possible choose a Minnesota native tree that is predicted to adapt well with climate change. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/treecare/best-native-yard-trees.html
  9. Will this tree have a messy fall clean up?
  10. Are you looking to reduce noise or create privacy?
  11. Research trees you are interested in from a trusted educational resource.
  12. Is there a source of water nearby?
  13. Are you looking for a certain fruit or berry? Will wildlife be attracted and a nuisance?
  14. Is this tree available to purchase at a local nursery?
  15. Call your utility company to check for underground pipes. Here in Minnesota call 811.
  16. Are seasonal allergies a problem for family members? If so, will the pollen from this tree cause any issues?
  17. Are you looking to attract pollinators?
  18. Is this species of tree susceptible to any pests or disease? Ex. Dutch Elm Disease
  19. How fast does this tree grow?
  20. What type of tree are you planting: bare root, potted, burlap?
  21. Is there a driveway or other structures that could interfere with root formation?
  22. Do you want a high or low maintenance tree?
